In brief

In the wake of intensified fighting, conditions in northwestern Syria have severely deteriorated. Recent airstrikes have caused massive displacement, critical infrastructure damage, and heightened food insecurity.

The humanitarian situation in northwestern Syria has taken a severe turn for the worse following a recent escalation in violence from pro-government forces and rebels. Years of conflict, compounded by a devastating earthquake in early 2023, have already left the region grappling with crippling poverty and a lack of essential services. Reports indicate that in recent days, Russian and Syrian military forces have conducted heavy airstrikes in Idlib and Aleppo. Hospitals are now overwhelmed as nearly 50,000 civilians have fled their homes, with many succumbing to shelling in their own neighborhoods, forcing hospitals to treat victims in makeshift conditions.According to the United Nations, over 50 airstrikes targeted Idlib Province within just two days, resulting in significant damage to four health facilities, four schools, and several camps for those displaced by the ongoing conflict. Stéphane Dujarric, U.N. spokesman, expressed alarm at a strike that compromised a water station, denying access to clean water for approximately 40,000 people. The Norwegian Refugee Council has reported shop closures and bread shortages in Aleppo, exacerbating the growing crisis. As the conflict rages on, the plight of civilians continues to deteriorate, calling for urgent international attention and intervention. The devastation echoes the most violent periods of Syria's civil war, once thought to be a fading memory, now resurfacing with devastating consequences.
