Tennessee Prison Chief to Resign After Botched Execution of Christa Pike

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced on Saturday that the state’s Department of Corrections commissioner will step down following the failed lethal‑injection execution of death‑row inmate Christa Pike.

Pike, convicted in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer, survived two attempts at lethal injection and is now in critical condition in a Tennessee hospital as her legal team seeks to have her sentence commuted.

In a statement to CBS, commissioner Frank Strada said his resignation is "in the best interests" of the state and called the ongoing investigation into the botched execution "entirely appropriate and necessary."

The incident has reignited concerns about the safety and legality of Tennessee’s capital punishment protocols, raising questions about oversight and the execution process. The state’s officials are working to determine how to address the shortcomings highlighted by this case while balancing the demands of justice and public safety.
