A 14-year-old who stabbed his art teacher told French police he attacked her because he had 'too much hatred', a prosecutor has said. The 60-year-old woman's condition remains a 'serious concern' after she was stabbed three to four times in her chest in front of 22 students in south-eastern France on Tuesday, a local official said. Toulon prosecutor Raphaël Balland indicated that the boy had premeditated the attack, having taken a knife from his kitchen with the intention of harming his teacher.
La Guicharde school in Sanary-sur-Mer was evacuated post-incident, and classes were canceled the following day. Balland noted there was no known religious or political motivation behind the attack, stating the student was frustrated with the teacher for reporting several disciplinary issues against him, which he deemed 'unfair'.
The teenager conveyed to authorities that he 'deeply regretted' the attack and expressed more hatred towards himself than towards the victim. A decision regarding his pre-trial detention will be made during his court appearance. The teacher, who has dedicated 28 years to the school and is currently at Sainte-Anne Military Hospital in Toulon, has reportedly stabilized but remains in serious condition.
This incident is part of a troubling trend, with several violent occurrences reported in schools across France recently. Last year, another 14-year-old was charged with murder after a fatal stabbing of a teaching assistant. Additionally, in April, a student was involved in a knife attack that resulted in casualties.
Education Minister Édouard Geffray, who visited the site of the attack, condemned the violence and highlighted that since March last year, 525 bladed weapons had been seized in schools. He remarked that schools reflect societal dynamics and cannot single-handedly curb the rising tide of violence, emphasizing the necessity for collective efforts involving families, staff, and communities to address these serious issues.
