In brief

Doctors affirm President Lula is stable and will soon resume presidential duties after successful surgery.

Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has officially been released from the hospital following a successful emergency craniotomy performed to address a brain bleed. The procedure was necessitated by a severe headache that prompted his admission to the Sírio-Libanês hospital in São Paulo. At a recent press conference held at the hospital, Lula expressed deep gratitude, stating, "This here is not an interview; this is simply a session to say thanks. To thank, firstly, God, who has looked after me in a very generous manner." The 79-year-old president suffered the intracranial hemorrhage after a fall in October when he slipped in the bathroom at his official residence, the Alvorada Palace. The medical team reported that while Lula underwent a craniotomy—where a segment of bone is temporarily removed from the skull to alleviate pressure—the president did not incur any lasting brain injuries and showed no adverse effects from the surgery. As per medical reports, he was lucid and engaging with staff shortly after the procedure. Thanks to the critical care provided, Lula is expected to return to Brasília next week to resume his duties following a brief diversion managed by Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin. Reflecting on his situation, Lula thanked supporters for their prayers while also extending forgiveness to detractors. He humorously mentioned that he had been preparing for his fall by sitting down with a task as mundane as cutting his toenails. Post-operation, he had also canceled a planned trip to Russia for a vital summit of Brics countries. Lula's political journey resumed in January of last year when he reclaimed the presidency after a fiercely contested election against Jair Bolsonaro, declaring in jest that he possesses "the energy of a 30-year-old." With this successful surgical procedure behind him, Lula is positioned to continue his presidency and engage with pressing national matters.
