SpaceX Rocket Makes Surprise Appearance off Christmas Island

A 52‑metre Falcon 9 rocket—pushing through a test launch from Texas on 24 July—was towed into view off the coast of Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean, leaving locals stunned and eager for a closer look.

David Watchorn, chair of the island’s Tourism Association, said he first mistook the hull for a commercial vessel. “It took a moment before I realized I was staring at a space rocket,” he told BBC. “It’s incredible to think about what it’s been through.”

The rocket, pulled by tugboats, is now a popular spot for visitors—some even leaving work early just to get a glimpse. Boats have been readied to bring the vehicle closer for a closer inspection.

While the vehicle remains grounded under inspection, the sight has sparked renewed interest in spaceflight among the island’s residents and tourists alike.
