NEW YORK (AP) — The ongoing saga stemming from Harvey Weinstein's criminal trial has taken a new turn as Ewa Sokola, a cardiologist in Poland, has filed a defamation lawsuit against her sister, Kaja Sokola. This accusation follows Kaja's claims of sexual assault by Weinstein and her conflicted testimony in court, which, Ewa alleges, harmed her professional reputation.

In her lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court, Ewa alleges that Kaja's public statements, which she considers libelous, have subjected her to ‘public hatred, disgrace, and loss of business’ in her medical practice.

Ewa claims that Kaja's testimony at the trial, where both sisters were involved, served to undermine her own accusations against Weinstein. During the trial, Ewa was called to support Kaja's claims, but her statements inadvertently aided the defense, leading to a split verdict where Weinstein was convicted of one charge but acquitted on others, including that of Kaja's allegations.

In a notably emotional defense, Ewa asserts that Kaja's claims have not only affected her professional standing but have also led to significant personal upheaval. She describes this as a betrayal, given their familial ties, with Kaja asserting that their relationship was damaged by what she depicts as false accusations of extreme misconduct against her.

This distressing chapter reflects broader issues surrounding the fallout from the #MeToo movement, where personal narratives have collided with legal realities, raising complex questions about truth, loyalty, and the repercussions of public discourse.
