In brief
Valerie's remarkable journey through the Australian wilderness highlights the resilience of domestic animals and the efforts of rescuers dedicated to bringing her home.
Valerie, a miniature dachshund, disappeared from her pen in November 2023 while her owners were visiting Kangaroo Island, South Australia. For over 17 months, she eluded capture, despite being glimpsed by locals and being caught on surveillance cameras. Last week, rescuers announced that she had been safely recaptured, marking the end of a long and arduous search.According to Jared Karran from Kangala Wildlife Rescue, the team faced numerous challenges in locating Valerie, but perseverance ultimately paid off. The dachshund was found approximately 10 miles away from her original escape point, identifiable by her distinct pink collar. Her owners, Josh Fishlock and Georgia Gardner, had searched tirelessly for five days before resigning themselves to the idea that she may never return. During her year-long foray into the wild, Valerie likely survived off the land by drinking from natural water sources and scavenging for food.Ms. Gardner previously expressed her doubts about Valerie’s rugged survival skills, noting that she is typically not a “rough-and-tough dog.” However, Valerie's tenacity and adaptability allowed her to thrive in hostile conditions. Now, reconnecting her with her owners will be a gradual process as she readjusts to life back in a home environment. The heartwarming reunion is anticipated to be a joyful event following her extraordinary adventure.
