Russia Releases Former U.S. Marine After Severe Health Decline

Robert Gilman, a 28‑year‑old Marine from Massachusetts detained in Russia in 2022 after a drunken assault on a police officer, was freed in a humanitarian release and flown to Washington DC on a U.S. plane, officials said.

State Senator Ed Markey described Gilman as "essentially catatonic" and battling a severe pneumonia, noting that he had been diagnosed with a dissociative stupor just over a month earlier.

After exiting Russian custody, Gilman is reported to have been tended by doctors and is expected to recover at a military hospital in Texas, a U.S. spokesperson has said.

Family members urged political support and thanked former President Trump for intervening, while this episode highlights risks for U.S. citizens abroad.
