Russia Bars Anti‑War Yabloko Party From Upcoming Parliamentary Election
In a bid to silence the only registered opposition to Russia’s war on Ukraine, a Moscow court halted Yabloko’s participation in the forthcoming parliamentary elections. The decision came after a complaint by pro‑Kremlin nationalist party Rodina, highlighting alleged extremist ties and foreign funding for Yabloko.
On Monday, hundreds of young Russians streamed outside the courthouse in an impromptu protest—songs, flags and apples (a symbolic sign for “Yabloko”) kept the scene alive. The crowd’s chants of “Shame!” erupted as news of the verdict spread, a rare, public display of dissent under a regime that has sealed dissent with wartime censorship and heavy penalties.
Rodina’s case cited Yabloko’s publications that supported the international LGBT movement, labeled extremist in 2023, and an alleged copyright breach involving a Soviet-era song. The federal financial watchdog also accused Yabloko of receiving funds from Germany and the United States.
Yabloko’s long‑running anti‑war stance—opposing earlier conflicts in Chechnya, Crimea, and the current invasion of Ukraine—has kept the party alive, though it has failed to win a seat since 2003. The Kremlin had earlier nodded to the party’s candidacy, possibly to showcase the unpopularity of an anti‑war voice, but has now opted to exclude it from the ballot, citing legal breaches.
The exclusion not only silences a distinct political viewpoint but may also reduce voter turnout, especially among those opposed to the ruling United Russia. With the remaining ten parties either supporting the war or avoiding criticism, the Kremlin's control over the electoral outcome remains intact, while independent monitoring bodies have seen their power eroded.
Yabloko’s campaign slogan—“For peace and freedom! For a life without fear!”—captured the aspirations of those yearning for diplomatic resolution and a Russia free from repression. Its removal from the ballot marks a chilling step in Russia’s crackdown on dissent.
