In brief

The Rapid Support Forces have reportedly invaded the Zamzam camp in North Darfur, looting and causing significant casualties among the already famine-stricken population. The situation intensifies amid ongoing civil conflict, leaving many displaced individuals without access to vital medical care.

A paramilitary group in Sudan has been accused of violently storming the Zamzam displacement camp, the country's largest, which is home to an estimated 500,000 individuals already facing severe famine conditions. Reports indicate that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched an assault on the camp late Tuesday, looting the market and setting multiple homes ablaze. Eyewitness accounts describe the aftermath as "extremely catastrophic," with numerous casualties reported.Located near el-Fasher, a city besieged by the RSF amid a civil war that erupted earlier this year, Zamzam had previously been sheltered from direct combat. The intense shelling by artillery has escalated since late last year, but this attack signals a troubling new level of violence against the vulnerable displaced population. Following the incident, thousands were forced to flee once again. The RSF has denied allegations of invading the camp, claiming instead that they had taken a nearby military base belonging to a rival armed faction. However, social media footage shows armed individuals within the camp, leading to speculation regarding the RSF's involvement. The medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which operates a hospital within Zamzam, confirmed the reception of seven deceased and 21 injured individuals post-attack, many of whom are in critical condition. Unfortunately, the medical facilities are overwhelmed and unable to adequately care for the influx of patients.North Darfur's Health Minister acknowledged the dire situation, citing that RSF forces have blocked roads to el-Fasher, hindering access to necessary medical treatment. The humanitarian crisis is further compounded by earlier escalations of violence against Zamzam, which had previously been relatively safe.As the ongoing conflict continues to exacerbate living conditions in North Darfur, international organizations are sounding the alarm over the risks of further destabilization and calls for help in the region are growing louder. The challenges facing the residents of Zamzam highlight the grim reality that there are now no safe havens within the region for those fleeing violence and disaster.
