In brief
Palmerston, once at the heart of British diplomacy, returns to public life to assist the Governor of Bermuda and engage with the local community.
Palmerston, the famed British Foreign Service Cat, is stepping back into the public eye as he takes up a new post in Bermuda. Known for his previous role at the Foreign Office, where he served until his retirement in 2020, Palmerston is now assuming the title of "feline relations consultant (semi-retired)" to the Governor of Bermuda, Andrew Murdoch. After leaving his diplomatic duties, Palmerston initially sought a quieter life, reportedly indulging in tree climbing while contemplating writing his memoirs. However, the charm of serving his country and community has evidently called him back to action. “I’ve just started work as feline relations consultant (semi-retired) to the new Governor of Bermuda,” he announced on X. “I’ve been busy meeting very welcoming Bermudians.”Palmerston, a distinguished black-and-white rescue cat named after the 19th-century Prime Minister Lord Palmerston, had been a vital figure in the Foreign Office. His past includes a well-known rivalry with Larry, the chief mouser at 10 Downing Street. This feud escalated in 2016 when a confrontation between the two cats led to an injury requiring veterinary attention for Larry. With Palmerston's new role situated more than 3,000 miles away, political experts speculate that their rivalry will likely diminish.Despite his absence from the public eye, Palmerston remained a topic of curiosity, with former senior civil servant Lord Simon McDonald noting that many wondered about the cat's fate. “Retirement to countryside” often led to the murky interpretation of his demise. Thankfully, Palmerston's revival in Bermuda provides fans with proof of his lively presence.Much like his namesake, who had his share of political disputes, Palmerston adds a peculiar yet endearing twist to international relations as he resettles in Bermuda, fostering feline diplomacy across the ocean. The nation welcomes this unique representative with open paws and suspecting hearts.
