In brief

Fu Zai, China’s inaugural police corgi, is capturing hearts online due to his keen sense of smell and amusing antics on the job. However, his food distractions have led to both applause and humorous training challenges.

Fu Zai, the first corgi to serve as a police sniffer dog in China, has become an internet sensation, garnering over 400,000 followers on social media. This fluffy four-legged officer, known for his short stature and exceptional sense of smell, started his journey with the Weifeng Public Security Bureau in Shandong after a trainer recognized his potential while he was still a playful puppy in the park. Although his dedication to earning treats has earned him high praise from superiors, it has also led to some humorous situations. Recently, Fu Zai was filmed snatching food from a child’s hand during a patrol, a moment that drew mixed reactions but ultimately brought joy to his fans, many of whom began sending him free sausages to enjoy during his rounds. Trainers are working diligently to curb Fu Zai's food-seeking behavior. In a light-hearted incident noted on video, his toys and snacks were temporarily taken away after he was caught taking a nap on the job. Experts highlighted the natural tendencies of corgis, which often leads to distractions owing to their curious nature and prey drive, complicating the training process. "This is typical behavior for corgis," explained Leonardo Palacio, a trainer from Real Focus K9 in Stamford, CT, who noted their tendency to be easily sidetracked. While Fu Zai continues to train and perform his duties, he remains a beloved figure in both local and online communities, illustrating the unique and heartwarming bond between humans and dogs in the line of duty.
