In a landmark move, Liberia’s Justice Ministry has charged former Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor with drug trafficking, money laundering and a series of other serious crimes.
Howard Taylor, who served as vice‑president from 2018 to 2024, was detained by national police at Roberts International Airport moments before she could board a flight out of Liberia. She was taken to the police headquarters in Monrovia where she remains in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings. No public statement has yet been made by the former official.
The charges arise from a recent series of seizures that have, until now, been the largest in Liberia’s history. Authorities have identified and arrested a network of operatives involved in importing, selling and transporting controlled substances, primarily cocaine, through West Africa’s expanding drug‑trade routes.
In the current investigation, three foreign nationals—two Croatians and a Ukrainian—are charged in absentia for their role in the same trafficking network. Liberian officials stress their commitment to dismantling every element of the operation from organizers to financiers.
Allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement have long plagued the Weah administration, which Howard Taylor supported. The new President, Joseph Boakai, has pledged a robust anti‑corruption campaign and vowed to prevent Liberia from becoming a drug trafficking haven amid rising trans‑national crime from South America to Europe.
