Oslo Mayor Anne Lindboe has called off her wedding ceremony in the wake of Norway’s King Harald V’s death.
The bride and her fiancé Pål Sandvid were set to tie the knot on Friday, but the city’s political adviser confirmed to BBC that the ceremony was postponed after the monarch’s sudden passing earlier that day.
Lindboe paid tribute to the late king on Instagram, writing, "It’s hard to imagine an Oslo and a Norway without you. You didn’t need a crowd to be King."
Harald, who ruled for 35 years, died in a national hospital where he was being treated for a rare blood condition. King Haakon VIII, Harald’s son, has recently ascended the throne.
No new wedding date has been announced; the mayor stated that details would be shared once the municipality’s advisers have deliberated.
The mayor, who has been engaged for five years, announced their engagement in June earlier this year.
Harald was known for modernizing the monarchy, notably marrying commoner Queen Sonja and serving as a unifying figure during crises. He died a day before their 58th wedding anniversary.
Grief has been evident across Oslo, with citizens laying flowers outside the Royal Palace and national leaders invoking unity in mourning.
