In brief

On 16 October 2026, a 16‑year‑old gunman entered Bend, Oregon’s Silver Rail Elementary School and opened fire, killing four people and injuring others. A teacher in the classroom tackled the gunman and attempted to disarm him, while a father with a concealed pistol, who had been driving past the school, sprinted inside and fatally shot the attacker multiple times. Police say the shooter had a history as a special-education student and that his motive remains unclear. Officials, including the Governor and President, praised the intervenors while urging continued support for survivors and the families of victims.

On 17 October 2026, a 16‑year‑old gunman broke into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, firing a shotgun and killing four people—three children and a teacher—before a bystander entered the classroom and shot him dead.

The gunman, who had been a former student with special‑education needs, brought at least 44 rounds of shotgun ammunition and fired as many as 15 shots inside the classroom. According to police, a teacher she could not name wrestled with the attacker, trying to take the gun from his hand while the boy attempted to pull it. While the teacher was unharmed, she “almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed,” according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz.

A 36‑year‑old father, driving past the school in his vehicle, saw the gunman shoot a vehicle outside the building and then fire through a classroom window. He ran into the school armed with a concealed .40 caliber pistol, fired at the suspect multiple times, and killed the attacker before police could intervene.

The victims were identified as five‑year‑old Rhoam Summer, an 11‑year‑old student, an eight‑year‑old student, and 25‑year‑old teacher Meghan Lambert. Two other students were wounded, one a seven‑year‑old who remains in stable condition, and another teacher who is receiving treatment in hospital.

Police have issued a search warrant for the suspect’s residence and say they are investigating how he gained access to the school and the firearm. The suspect’s name is identified by police as Griffin J. John II. The identity of the bystander who shot the attacker has not been released, but his family has provided his name to the media.

In response, President Donald Trump called the father a “great hero,” while Governor Tina Kotek acknowledged that the men carried a heavy emotional burden but praised their action for saving lives. The community has held vigils and made a memorial at the school, and a camera captured the candlelit gathering.
