Norwegian monarch's health deteriorates as he receives antibiotics in Oslo, putting him on leave from royal duties.

The palace reported that King Harald V, 89, has worsened after being admitted to Oslo University Hospital with a bloodstream bacterial infection. The king has been away from public duties since early July, with Crown Prince Haakon the current regent. Earlier this year the monarch was treated for haemolytic anaemia and fitted with a pacemaker following an illness abroad. While his health remains critical, the palace confirms he is still receiving treatment and will remain in hospital until further notice. The royal family has also faced challenges that year, with Crown Princess Mette‑Marit undergoing a lung transplant and a network of family news in the headlines.

King Harald V’s Health Declines, Palace Says

The royal palace confirmed that King Harald V has worsened while receiving antibiotics for a bloodstream bacterial infection at Oslo University Hospital. Although the king continues to respond to treatment, he will remain on sick leave until his health improves and is expected to stay in hospital for an undefined period.

Harald, 89, ascended to the throne in 1991 and has been dealing with haemolytic anaemia—a rare condition that reduces red blood cell counts, leading to fatigue and shortness of breath. In April 2024 a permanent reduction in his public engagements was announced, citing age concerns.

The monarchical family has endured additional public scrutiny this year. Crown Prince Haakon, 53, has been acting as regent. Crown Princess Mette‑Marit received a lung transplant in June after a long-term diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis. Meanwhile, her son Marius Borg Høiby was sentenced to four years in prison for rape convictions earlier in the year.

In media reports, Mette‑Marit’s past association with a notorious sexual offender has also come under scrutiny, prompting her to issue an apology and admit to poor judgment when the friendship was revealed.

The palace’s announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about the longevity of the monarchy’s public presence, given King Harald’s declining health and the broader personal challenges affecting the royal household.
