In brief

Recent reports reveal a troubling trend in Indian politics, where resort-based coercion is used to manipulate legislative outcomes.

Nitin Deshmukh, a lawmaker from Maharashtra, India, has shared a harrowing experience that underscores a disturbing trend in India's political landscape known as "resort politics." After a routine assembly vote, Deshmukh received an unexpected invitation from a senior party official for dinner. What he thought would be an innocent car ride soon turned into a nightmare as he realized he was being taken against his will.As the vehicle sped toward an undisclosed location, it joined a convoy, and Deshmukh understood he had been kidnapped. He was then isolated in a luxury hotel, restrained, and drugged after attempting to escape. His ordeal is part of a broader strategy deployed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to destabilize state governments they could not defeat through elections. The term "resort politics" refers to the technique of sequestering dissenting lawmakers in luxurious venues until they capitulate to the party's demands or until they are outnumbered by their opponents, forcing governments to collapse. This tactic has reportedly been used in multiple states, with lawmakers taken away to prevent them from supporting opposition parties.Lawmakers like Deshmukh have revealed that they were not alone; several others faced similar coercive measures to ensure a sufficient number of defectors aligned with Modi's BJP. In recent political battles across the country, instances of intimidation and manipulation have raised ethical concerns about the state of democracy in India, as some fear that these practices undermine the will of the electorate and parliamentary integrity. As a result, "resort politics" has not only become a strategy for the powerful ruling party to assert dominance but has also signaled a worrying trend toward authoritarian practices under the guise of political maneuvering. With growing awareness, the need for accountability and reforms in political processes remains critical for safeguarding democracy in India.
