Three incendiary attacks in Thessaloniki targeting New Democracy residences triggered the death of Vagia Nestora, mother of party candidate Afroditi Nestora. Nestora suffered 80% burns and multiple organ failure after an explosion at the apartment building where her daughter lives, and she died in hospital on July 1 , 2026.
Police said improvised incendiary devices were placed outside the building, destroying two cars, damaging motorcycles, and igniting the property. Two other attacks at the homes of Zisis Ioakeimovits and Savvas Anastasiadis caused no injuries.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis condemned the act as ‘murderous and inhumane’ political violence, pledging a united response to banish terrorism. Opposition leaders and former prime minister Alexis Tsipras echoed these calls for arrests and justice.
Greece’s Counter‑Terrorism Service has taken over the investigation; no group has claimed responsibility and no arrests have been made yet.
