A newly‑released security camera capture from Kumamoto General Hospital in Japan records the exact instant a magnitude 6.8 quake struck the region on 28 July. The footage was taken in an operating room where an abdominal surgery was underway.
It shows the surgical table and instruments swinging visibly while the attending surgeon and staff members instinctively positioned themselves in front of the patient. A nurse can be seen opening a door and directing the emergency exit, ensuring a clear evacuation corridor as the building vibrated.
Despite the sudden and violent motion, all four surgeries at the time were completed without any complications. According to the hospital, the staff’s rapid response and shielded positions helped protect the patients from sudden movement of medical devices.
Following the quake, Kumamoto General Hospital halted outpatient services; normal operations resumed on 5 August. The incident underscores the critical need for robust seismic safety protocols in medical facilities.
