Australian Prime Minister Under Fire Over Melon Comment

During a 7 July appearance on the “Bush Deep” podcast, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the crown melons gifted by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as “pretty strange” and “quite good.” The remark sparked accusations of a sexist joke and diplomatic insult, prompting calls for an apology from opposition leaders.

Albanese’s comment followed a host’s joke that Takaichi “brought two…She just came in looking like Pamela Anderson,” and the PM had to clarify that the melons were “beautiful.” A former Japanese envoy, Shingo Yamagami, called the exchange “sexist” and declared that it hurt the special strategic partnership between the two countries.

Opposition leader Angus Taylor demanded a full apology, while members of the Government—Finance Minister Katy Gallagher and Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek—vouched for the PM’s good intentions, insisting the media had misread the dialogue.

The incident also echoed earlier controversies such as Albanese’s on‑air reference to pop‑star Kylie Minogue, which he later apologized for. The current uproar reflects the growing scrutiny of leaders’ public conduct in an era of instant media visibility.
