Kyiv Suffers Latest Russian Attack on Critical Infrastructure
Russian missile strikes overnight on the Ukrainian capital marked the first deliberate targeting of Kyiv’s critical infrastructure in several months, according to the city’s mayor.
Seventeen civilians were killed as blocks of flats, warehouses, a children’s hospital and a school were struck. More than 40 people were wounded in the attacks, the State Emergency Service confirmed.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned residents of the Desnyansky and Dnipro districts that they could experience disruptions in hot‑water supplies following the overnight attacks, adding that repair work is underway.
Speaking at a wrecked apartment block, Klitschko stressed Ukraine’s urgent need for “ammunition, anti‑missile systems – we need support from our partners.” The local air‑defence relies on Patriot interceptor missiles supplied by the United States, many of which have been used in other theatres.
Ukraine’s air‑force report indicated none of the Russian ballistic missiles that struck overnight were intercepted, adding to the city’s vulnerability. The Russian defence ministry reported air, land and sea‑based weapons were used to target military facilities and warehouses.
The United Nations secretary‑general criticised the escalation, describing the attacks as “another tragic example of the alarming pattern of escalating strikes against populated areas.”
The strikes forced a day of mourning in Kyiv and left families grappling with the destruction of their homes and essential services.
Elsewhere, the broader Kyiv region reported a man killed and seven injured in a Brovary‑Boryspil strike, while in the Donetsk region one person died and 11 were wounded.
The conflict, originally triggered by Russia’s full‑scale invasion in February 2022, continues to see heavy air and ground assaults on both sides, with Ukraine now launching drone strikes deep into Russian territory, including a recent wave of 600 drones targeting Moscow.
For the residents of Kyiv, the night’s attacks exemplify the war’s relentless pressure on civilian infrastructure and the pressing need for reinforced international defence collaboration.
