In brief

In a decisive vote, members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) have agreed to Boeing's latest compensation package, securing a 38% pay increase spread over four years, coupled with a one-time bonus of $12,000. The strike, which began on September 13 and involved approximately 30,000 workers, has significantly impacted production at Boeing facilities. With 59% backing the deal, workers are set to return to their jobs as early as this Wednesday and no later than November 12. IAM union leader Jon Holden remarked, “Through this victory and the strike that made it possible, IAM members have taken a stand for respect and fair wages in the workplace.” While the union initially sought a 40% increase, past proposals had been declined by the workforce.

Boeing's CEO Kelly Ortberg expressed a collective commitment to restoration and improvement, stating there is "much work ahead to return to the excellence that made Boeing an iconic company." The ramifications of the strike were highlighted at the governmental level, with U.S. Labor Secretary Julie Su actively participating in negotiations, underscoring the strike's significance to the U.S. economy.Financially, Boeing faced a difficult situation, estimating losses of nearly $10 billion due to the strike, with its commercial aircraft segment reporting a $4 billion operating loss for the third quarter. In a move to stabilize its finances, Boeing recently announced a share sale to raise more than $20 billion and disclosed plans to lay off around 17,000 employees, beginning with notifications this November. The latest turmoil at Boeing escalated following an incident earlier this year involving a passenger aircraft and continued with setbacks in its space division, including the aborted Starliner mission. As the company navigates these challenges, the conclusion of the strike marks a critical juncture for both its workforce and operational future.
