Six tourists and pilot killed in Kenya helicopter crash

A Eurocopter EC130 B4 crashed at Mount Ololokwe in central Kenya on 19 August 2026, killing the pilot and six tourists who were on a scenic flight over the Samburu wildlife conservancy.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) stated the accident occurred at 09:13 local time (06:13 GMT) and that the nationalities of the victims are yet to be confirmed. The crew was on a tourist‑focused flight from Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro River, a route popular with visitors of the region’s national parks.

An image released by reporters shows smoke rising from the crash site amid rugged terrain. Red‑Cross officials have reported that the area is currently inaccessible, but drones are being employed to assess the wreckage and plan a rescue operation.

The KCAA is coordinating the incident’s response while the Air Accident Investigation Department will lead a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The transport ministry has also been involved in supporting the investigation.

Samburu County, known for its soaring scenery and private wildlife conservancies, has seen previous helicopter accidents: a 2021 crash near Nairobi killed ten soldiers, while a 2024 military flight incident claimed the life of the army chief.

Helicopter accidents, though relatively rare, are not uncommon in Kenya due to challenging terrain and operational constraints. The latest incident highlights the ongoing need for stringent safety measures and thorough investigations for the aviation sector in the country.
