BROADVIEW, Ill. (AP) — Federal agents detained multiple individuals on Friday near an immigration facility outside Chicago, a site that has seen increasing protests amid the Trump administration's efforts to ramp up immigration enforcement.
The protests grew throughout the day, reacting to barricades erected to separate demonstrators from law enforcement stationed outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing facility in Broadview, located around 12 miles west of Chicago.
Participants have attempted to obstruct traffic in and out of the facility in recent weeks as dissent rises against the enforcement surge initiated earlier in September. Federal agents have employed tear gas, pepper balls, and other crowd control measures at recent protests, with at least five individuals facing federal charges due to clashes with law enforcement.
On Friday, local authorities reinforced their presence, shutting down several streets around the facility and deploying Illinois State Police officers clad in riot gear. Concrete barriers were installed overnight to create designated protest areas.
It remains unclear how many individuals were taken into custody on Friday. Eyewitnesses noted one man struggling with agents after apparently breaching a line to reach a roadway.
A crowd of largely reporters and a few demonstrators stood in the designated area while helicopters circled overhead. “Every week, ICE escalates its violence against us,” stated Demi Palecek, a military veteran and congressional candidate. “It’s only a matter of time before someone is killed.”
Protesters expressed dissatisfaction with being confined to a designated area, which they feel infringes upon their First Amendment rights. They voiced frustration at local, county, and state law enforcement collaborating closely with federal agents.
Jonny Bishop, a 28-year-old former teacher from Palatine, lamented the restrictions, claiming, “We’ve done these things peacefully... But our rights are being violated.”
Officers on the front lines reportedly advanced on protesters, forming a wider perimeter around the building as tensions flared. Supporters highlighted that past protests had been maintained peacefully until escalating law enforcement measures threatened that peace.
