Japan Beer Giants Face Price‑Fixing Investigation
Japanese officials have raided the country’s biggest beer makers over allegations they worked together to raise the price of their beverages.
Asahi and Kirin confirmed to the BBC that their premises were searched by the Japan Fair Trade Commission, adding that they would fully cooperate with the authority. There are reports that Sapporo Breweries and Suntory Spirits were also raided; both firms have been contacted for comment.
Shares of Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo fell after the investigation news broke on Wednesday, while Suntory is not publicly listed. The Japan Times reports the probe centres on price increases announced in April last year and October 2022.
All four companies cited rising raw‑material costs, as well as energy and transportation, as reasons for their price hikes. Kirin Holdings said its subsidiary, Kirin Brewery Company, was searched on suspicion of violating the Antimonopoly Act and would fully cooperate with the commission.
Kirin warned that the matter’s impact on its financial results had not yet been determined, promising to disclose any material developments promptly. Asahi Breweries said it was subject to investigation over a suspected violation of the Act on Prohibition of Private Monopolisation and Maintenance of Fair Trade and pledged full cooperation.
The Japan Fair Trade Commission has yet to comment on the case.
