In brief

Palestinian health officials reported the deaths of six infants in Gaza attributed to the harsh winter weather and insufficient shelter. Hospitals are overwhelmed by cases of hypothermia, and calls for urgent aid are growing amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis which has exacerbated following months of conflict.

At least six infants in Gaza have sadly succumbed to the cold in the past fortnight, as reported by local health officials. The Patient's Friends Benevolent Society hospital in Gaza City noted that, among nine newborns treated for cold-related ailments, five have died, with one remaining in critical condition. In southern Gaza, a family reported the death of their two-month-old daughter, tragically indicating the pervasive dangers of the harsh winter conditions. The health facility has called for immediate assistance in the form of shelters and fuel to support approximately 945,000 displaced Palestinians, many of whom are living in makeshift tents lacking adequate winterization. The Palestinian authorities, particularly Hamas, have accused Israel of failing to permit the delivery of vital shelter supplies despite a ceasefire agreement initiated five weeks ago. Conversely, Israel refutes these claims and maintains that hundreds of thousands of necessary items have been made available to the region. The situation is dire, with nearly all of Gaza's 2.1 million residents having faced recurrent displacement during a persistent 16-month conflict between Israel and Hamas. An alarming 70% of buildings in the area have suffered damage or destruction, leading to a virtually collapsed healthcare infrastructure, with only a handful of hospitals still operational and facing shortages in essentials.Reports indicate that nighttime temperatures in Gaza have plunged below 10C (50F) recently, with a low of 3C (37F) recorded. Doctors have been vocal about the emergency, highlighting that vulnerable newborns are facing life-threatening conditions, including hypothermia, as many are born weighing under 2kg (4.4lbs).Medical professionals from the PFBS hospital have documented the heartbreaking reality as helpless babies come to them suffering from cold injuries; among them were infants just days old. The toll on the youth is particularly heartbreaking, with Dr. Samer Lubad stating that conditions resulting from the cold have claimed the lives of several newborns just in recent weeks. The health ministry run by Hamas reported that the total death toll of children attributed to the cold has reached 15 since winter commenced. Meanwhile, also reported was the devastating account of a two-month-old girl, Sham Yousef al-Shambari, found lifeless by her mother, emphasizing the urgent need for better living conditions and healthcare in the region.Ahead of the impending expiration of the ceasefire, discord continues, with Israel cancelling the release of 600 Palestinian prisoners linked to ongoing hostage negotiations. This atmospheric tension adds further complexities to the humanitarian situation in Gaza, leaving many uncertain about the future and the possibility of increased hostility amid dwindling resources.
