In brief

President Joko Widodo's son, Kaesang Pangarep, has sparked outrage after a luxury private jet trip contradicts his father's populist image, leading to an investigation by Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission.

Amidst a political transition, Indonesia's President Joko Widodo is facing mounting criticism over the actions of his younger son, Kaesang Pangarep. The controversy erupted when images of Kaesang and his wife, Erina Gudono, on a private jet surfaced on social media, showcasing a lifestyle that many Indonesians find deeply out of touch with their realities. Their journey from Jakarta to Los Angeles appeared extravagant, featuring updates on luxuries like a $1,500 stroller and a $25 lobster roll, which was particularly insensitive given that many Indonesians struggle to meet basic needs. The jet in question is connected to Shopee, an online retail platform that has deep ties to the Widodo family’s political network. Critics have raised eyebrows at the privilege afforded to Kaesang, questioning whether he would have been able to access such luxury without his father's position and family connections. Boyamin Saiman, spokesperson for the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Community, stated, "If Kaesang wasn’t the mayor's brother who had signed an agreement with Shopee, would he really have been able to fly on Shopee’s private jet?”While Kaesang has attempted to downplay the situation by claiming he merely “hitchhiked” on a friend's plane, few details surrounding this "friend" have emerged, leading to speculation about the true nature of the trip. The Corruption Eradication Commission is currently looking into whether this incident constitutes a bribe, given the family’s commercial connections. The investigation continues as the country's graft authorities refuse to disclose specifics about the jet's ownership, previously linked to Garena Online, which, like Shopee, is operated by SEA Limited, based in Singapore. As President Widodo prepares to leave office, this scandal could tarnish the legacy of an administration eager to present itself as a champion of the common person, revealing the complexities of privilege that overshadow public life in Indonesia.
