GREELEY, Colo. — Approximately 3,800 workers at the Swift Beef Co. plant in Greeley, Colorado, have gone on strike, marking a significant moment in labor history as it's the first strike at a U.S. beef slaughterhouse in four decades. The workers union, representing employees at the plant owned by JBS USA, has raised serious allegations against the company regarding unfair labor practices.
Striking workers could be seen picketing outside the plant early Monday morning, with signs urging patrons not to support JBS. Workers are expressing their frustrations in the face of a hostile negotiating environment, as their previous contract expired on Sunday, leading to this unprecedented labor action.
“They don’t really value their workers, and we’re the ones that help them get all their profit,” stated Leticia Avalos, a union steward and Greeley native. Having worked at the plant since 2020, Avalos highlights the difficult choices facing workers who depend on their jobs to support their families while demanding fair treatment from the company.
The strike is rooted in accusations of intimidation and retaliation against union members trying to negotiate better terms for wages and working conditions. In addition to wage increases, workers demand essential healthcare coverage that reflects the rigorous demands of their jobs.
JBS USA has stated that their contract offer was fair, and they assert compliance with all federal labor laws. However, union representatives noted that workers are subjected to extreme safety risks and have faced significant financial burdens, with costs for personal protective equipment soaring.
The impact of the strike reverberates through the local community, known for its reliance on the beef industry, amid a significant decrease in the U.S. cattle population which is at a 75-year low. Meanwhile, beef prices have reached record highs, exacerbating economic anxiety nationwide.
This strike has drawn parallels to a similar event in 1985, focused on a Hormel plant, marking a crucial moment in labor activism that set the tone for negotiations affecting workers' rights across the nation.
As the strike unfolds, both the workers and the broader community will be significantly impacted, revealing the ongoing challenges and dynamics within America's labor market.
