In brief

Christina Block, heir to a successful steakhouse chain, stands accused of orchestrating the violent kidnapping of her two children from Denmark during a bitter custody fight. An Israeli security operation allegedly carried out the abduction, involving former agents from Germany and Israel. Investigation uncovered links to former German intelligence chief August Hanning, who has been arrested for treason and espionage. The trial has been repeatedly delayed, adding to suspicions that state and private legal forces are navigating a high‑stakes showdown.

Christina Block, a 53‑year‑old heir to a profitable chain of steakhouse restaurants, is on trial for allegedly orchestrating a violent abduction of her children from Denmark, a plot that has brought Germany’s intelligence community under scrutiny.

According to prosecutors, Block and her lawyer, Andreas Costard, hired a 36‑year‑old Israeli operative and five others to take two of her children, aged 10 and 13, from their father’s home in Denmark during a New Year celebrations event. The victims were allegedly forced into a vehicle, gagged, and held in a campervan before being returned to Hamburg on 2 January 2024.

Investigations uncovered evidence that tied in former German intelligence chief August Hanning—now arrested for treason and espionage—by accusing him of having arranged security staff in Denmark during an earlier 2022 abduction attempt. Hanning’s lawyer denies the allegations, though authorities allege he sold state secrets to foreign powers.

The case has seen multiple delays, most recently because a key witness failed to appear in court, and the trial is currently paused for two weeks. Journalists and legal analysts note that the intertwined legal battles over custody and national security may intertwine further as more evidence surfaces.

Block’s partner, former TV presenter Gerhard Delling, and three others face charges of aiding and abetting. While Block and her co‑defendants deny wrongdoing, the Israeli security team’s head, David Barkay, has alleged that the operation was sanctioned by the accused parties.
