In brief
Iran has commenced the evacuation of its military leaders and personnel from Syria, highlighting challenges in maintaining support for President Bashar al-Assad amidst renewed rebel activity. This move, initiated on Friday, involves key commanders from Iran's Quds Forces, alongside other military and diplomatic staff, as their presence in Syria becomes increasingly untenable.
According to various Iranian and regional officials, the evacuations are being carried out via air and land routes to Iraq, Lebanon, and the Syrian port of Latakia. Notably, the Iranian embassy in Damascus has also begun to reduce its personnel. "We cannot continue as an advisory force if Syria's army lacks the will to engage in combat," remarked Mehdi Rahmati, a prominent Iranian analyst, indicating a strategic withdrawal due to an insufficient commitment from Assad's forces. This withdrawal comes at a pivotal moment, suggesting a waning influence of Iranian support in the region and an uncertain future for Assad's regime amid increasing pressure from rebel offensives. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing developments likely to reshape the landscape of Syrian conflict.
