Glutathione Gaining Traction as Firefighter Support, Union Warns of Hazards
After the devastating 19‑victim Eaton Fire, Pasadena Fire Captain David Marquez inhaled a dose of glutathione on a roadside outside the Rose Bowl and felt immediate relief. Years of smoke‑related injury had left the crew with chronic cough, headaches and exhaustion; the agent appeared to cut those symptoms short and dramatically.
Scientists know that smoke inhalation can trigger long‑term diseases, including several cancers. Firefighters are especially vulnerable, with the National Institute for Occupational Safety reporting a 14% higher mortality rate from cancer in the profession compared to the general population.
Glutathione, a naturally produced antioxidant, has been offered at major U.S. wildfires—most recently in Spokane—joining the suite of naturopathic therapies such as acupuncture and massage that Integrated Health Action Network (IHAN) volunteers deploy on the front lines. Anecdotal praise from first responders has grown, however clinical data remain sparse.
Last month, the International Association of Fire Fighters issued a cautionary statement after two recalls for contaminated glutathione from compounding pharmacies and additional studies suggesting that other natural nutrients can sometimes increase, rather than lower, cancer risk. The union clarified that the current use of the drug is largely “placebo‑level” and that its long‑term safety profile is unknown.
“We don’t know if it’s effective,” commented IAFF health‑safety assistant Sean DeCrane. “We don’t know the long‑term effect of this type of treatment.” He warned that marketing of glutathione might distract from proven protective measures, such as high‑quality respirators and rigorous equipment decontamination.
Naturopath Jen Riegle, the network’s co‑founder, maintains that glutathione often improves headaches, fatigue and brain fog in firefighters. Yet she concedes the evidence is purely anecdotal and calls for peer‑reviewed studies. At the same time, California’s proposed pharmacy regulations to restrict glutathione production were withdrawn in 2023 after firefighter testimony highlighted perceived health benefits.
Greg Fonts of the IAFF says cultural attitudes about firefighter health have collapsed from a “cancer is part of the job” mindset to a proactive safety culture. Many younger firefighters now request antioxidants and other decontamination techniques as part of routine care.
Despite enthusiasm, pulmonologist Dr. Coralynn Sack stresses the urgent need for standardized clinical trials. She notes that while antioxidant supplementation theoretically counteracts inhalational toxins, existing data in firefighters are limited and mixed. Until evidence accumulates, the debate will center on balancing hopeful but unproven treatments with proven protective strategies.
For now, the glutathione story illustrates the intersection of frontline ingenuity, occupational hazards and regulatory caution—an evolving narrative as fire services confront the physics of smoke and the biology of survival.
