NEW YORK (AP) — Recently released from prison where he served a fraction of a seven-year sentence for financial fraud, former U.S. Representative George Santos claims his experience has left him humbled, despite facing criticism over President Trump's decision to grant him clemency.
In a candid interview on CNN, Santos reflected on his prison term, saying he’s learned from his mistakes and tasted a “large slice of humble pie.” He responded confidently to skepticism surrounding Trump's clemency, suggesting that the backlash is akin to what would be faced by any pardoned individual, stating, “I’m pretty confident if President Trump had pardoned Jesus Christ off the cross, he would have had critics.”
Santos, who made headlines for his fabricated background as a successful Wall Street figure, previously admitted to fraud and identity theft, having defrauded campaign contributors out of significant funds. His release came just 84 days into his sentence based on Trump’s belief that Santos had shown Republican loyalty and shouldn’t suffer a lengthy punishment.
On the program, Santos expressed regrets surrounding his actions, describing his situation as one where he was “in a chaotic ball of flame” when he committed crimes. He did extend an apology to former constituents in New York but ambiguously addressed questions about repaying those he misled, indicating he would comply if legally required: “If it’s required of me by the law, yes. If it’s not, then no.”
Santos also dismissed the concerns of fellow Republicans about Trump's early intervention, suggesting that other pardons, such as Biden's for his son Hunter, warranted more scrutiny. Despite the controversies, he expressed intent to use his second chance wisely. His past misrepresentations surfaced shortly after his election, unveiling a life filled with misleading claims regarding his education and professional history, leading to his eventual expulsion from Congress.
Post-prison, Santos has resorted to selling personalized video messages on Cameo to support himself financially. He indicated that he has now resumed this venture.
