French police arrested a 14‑year‑old student after two teachers were shot at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, a suburb of Marseille.
The incident, which took place early Monday morning, involved the principal and a 37‑year‑old teacher who were wounded in the leg and thigh respectively. Neither officer was given life‑threatening injuries, and no pupils were harmed.
Mayor Jean‑Pierre Squillari said the suspect was detained “immediately” after the disturbance, and that all students were quickly confined and secured. The student entered the school with a gun and was restrained by a member of staff before authorities arrived.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray confirmed via social media that the school staff were victims of gunfire and that a pupil is believed to be the perpetrator. He, along with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, is scheduled to visit the scene later that day.
Investigators say the event is not linked to the ongoing protests over school conditions in France, although the national education system remains under scrutiny for safety procedures.
The incident raised concerns among parents and educators about gun access among students. Authorities are reviewing protocols for handling potential threats on school premises.
