Israel has executed air strikes in Gaza in response to what Israeli officials asserted as violations of a ceasefire agreement brokered by the US. Defence Minister Israel Katz accused Hamas militants of launching an attack on Israeli soldiers and failing to return the bodies of deceased hostages as stipulated in the ceasefire terms.
Hamas, however, rejected these accusations, claiming it had no part in the alleged attack and maintained its commitment to the ceasefire deal. Reports indicate that at least nine Palestinians were killed in the Israeli strikes, with the situation on the ground rapidly deteriorating.
Following the recent flare-up, US Vice-President JD Vance stated that he believed the ceasefire was still holding, though tensions remain high. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's office confirmed military action had been ordered without detailing the reasons for the strikes.
Defence Minister Katz elaborated that Hamas had crossed a 'bright red line' by reportedly attacking Israeli soldiers, emphasizing that serious repercussions would follow for such actions. Witnesses across Gaza reported powerful explosions after the strikes, with areas like Gaza City and Khan Younis heavily affected.
A Civil Defence spokesman in Gaza noted that four casualties were reported from an Israeli bombing of a residential building in the Sabra neighbourhood, which included three women. Additional strikes in Khan Younis also resulted in fatalities among civilians, including children.
Hamas condemned the missile strikes as a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement. The discord arises notably from a recent incident where Hamas handed over a coffin containing remains that did not belong to any of the Israeli hostages previously confirmed deceased. The Israeli military asserted this constituted a substantial breach of the terms of compliance laid out in the ceasefire.
During the ongoing exchanges, the terms of the ceasefire are strained as political leaders grapple with the ramifications of accusations and military actions on both sides. As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza escalates, international observers continue to watch closely, urging for a sustainable resolution.
