In brief

Afghan families ahead of a deportation deadline in Pakistan confront the uncertainty of returning to a homeland fraught with danger after decades of refuge.

In a dimly lit refugee settlement on the outskirts of Karachi, Pakistan, Afghan families gathered on the eve of Eid al-Fitr, weighed down not by festive cheer but by foreboding anxieties. With a deportation deadline looming on March 31, thousands who have sought safety in Pakistan for generations face the grim prospect of returning to a hostile environment in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.Since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, millions of Afghans have fled their war-torn country to find refuge in neighboring Pakistan. While many have returned over the years, continuous violence and political instability have recently led to an influx of refugees, particularly following the Taliban’s rapid takeover in August 2021. This influx has included families who were promised a new life in the United States, but instead now find themselves facing forced repatriation.“Pakistan needs to show some humanity; granting more time for these families to prepare is crucial,” urged Haji Abdullah Bukhari, a community leader in Karachi. “Forcing them to uproot their lives on such short notice is unthinkable. Many of these individuals have lived here for decades and are now being returned to a country they can barely recognize.”The pressure on Pakistan to deport Afghan refugees stems from rising tensions with the Taliban regime, with Pakistani officials accusing the Taliban of harboring militant groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), responsible for numerous deadly attacks on Pakistani soil. The Taliban, however, reject these claims, which only exacerbates the relationship between the two nations. As the clock runs down towards the deportation deadline, fear and uncertainty loom large over the Afghan refugee community in Pakistan. They stand on the brink of returning to a reality filled with violence and oppression, all while seeking a glimmer of hope for a better future that seems to slip further out of reach.
