In brief
Greece is currently facing a significant seismic event as more than 200 earthquakes have struck the Aegean region, particularly around the popular tourist island of Santorini.
Emergency services were on high alert on Monday, with schools closing in response to the intense seismic activity. Since the weekend, the Aegean region has experienced over 200 tremors, prompting protective measures across multiple affected islands. Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos noted that the frequency and magnitude of the quakes appear to be rising, categorizing these events as an “intense pre-seismic sequence.” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, currently attending an EU meeting in Brussels, urged island residents to remain calm and adhere to safety protocols. Most of the recent earthquakes have been minor; however, some have surpassed a magnitude of 4.5, with reports of readings around 4.7 and 4.9. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries and minimal damage, confined largely to minor landslides. While Greece frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location on various fault lines, the rising intensity of these recent tremors is notably unusual.
