Egyptian authorities have arrested two men in connection with a shocking scheme that alleged fake judges were tricking citizens out of money. The Interior Ministry reports that the suspects staged court scenes and impersonated judges on social media, misleading users into believing they could secure housing from government agencies.
The main suspects include an unemployed man and a student from Cairo and Giza. In police interviews they confessed to orchestrating a criminal gang that promised housing allocation while siphoning money from ordinary citizens.
The men reportedly fabricated judicial credentials and staged videos inside a courthouse wearing a genuine judicial sash. Upon arrest the police seized a firearm, a judicial sash, and identity cards bearing false judicial titles.
Court employees who were assisted by the suspects in filming and publishing the videos were also detained and questioned. The State-owned newspaper al-Ahram reports that the suspects will face an expedited criminal trial.
