Dozens Trapped as Delhi Building Collapses Amid Basement Excavation

In a tragic incident in south‑west Delhi’s Satya Niketan neighbourhood, a five‑storey hostel collapsed around 13:30 local time (08:00 GMT) on a Sunday, with an estimated 50 people inside when it fell.

Eyewitness reports cited extensive construction work being carried out in the building’s basement at the time, raising questions about the integrity of the structure. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Police were quick to mobilise rescue teams, but the collapse left at least one victim dead and two others in critical condition, according to local police statements.

Rescuers are racing to free trapped individuals, many of whom were thought to be in their rooms for a holiday weekend. As a precaution, neighbouring buildings were also evacuated, with Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assuring the public that every effort was being made to safely rescue those trapped.

The owner of an adjacent shop described the challenges: “They strengthened the upper building, but the pillars below were weak,” the shop owner told ANI, noting that excavation work had increased the shop’s lease income.
