In brief
A tourist submarine sank in the Red Sea, resulting in the deaths of six Russian tourists and injuries to nine others. The Egyptian authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident, which raises significant safety questions regarding maritime excursions in the region.
A tragic incident unfolded in the Red Sea on Thursday when a tourist submarine capsized, resulting in the deaths of six out of 45 passengers on board. The vessel, known as the Sindbad, went down around 10:00 local time, leading to a swift rescue of the remaining passengers and crew. Those aboard included tourists from various countries including Russia, India, Norway, and Sweden, alongside five Egyptian crew members. The six deceased tourists were primarily identified as Russian, including two married doctors whose young daughters were among the injured and are currently receiving medical attention. Reports indicate that nine individuals sustained injuries, with four in critical condition. The cause of the submarine sinking remains under investigation, but initial assessments suggest that it may have struck a reef, causing it to lose pressure while submerged at a depth of 20 meters (65 feet). The Red Sea governor, Amr Hanafy, confirmed that the submarine had been operating legally with the appropriate licenses and certifications in place for its crew. This incident underscores a worrying trend in the Red Sea region, as it is the second such maritime disaster in the last six months. In November, another vessel, the Sea Story, sank near Marsa Allam, resulting in the disappearance of 11 passengers. The recurring nature of these events prompts urgent scrutiny of the safety protocols adhered to by local authorities that oversee tourist activities in one of Egypt’s most vital economic sectors.Travelers have reported that the Sindbad submarine was well-maintained and equipped with large viewing portholes for optimal sightseeing. The submarine's operations generally included safety briefings, yet life jackets were reportedly not provided during excursions. As investigations continue, concerns about the safety measures in place for underwater tours in popular tourist destinations remain at the forefront, emphasizing the need for thorough assessments to prevent future tragedies.
