In brief

In an extraordinary blend of tradition and modernity, three Pilgrims recently embarked on a remarkable journey from Spain to Saudi Arabia, echoing a centuries-old Islamic tradition of pilgrimage by horseback. Among the 1.5 million people who made their way to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj this year, these adventurous riders managed to capture significant attention not just with their long trek, but also through their social media engagement.

Over seven months, they covered nearly 4,000 miles, navigating diverse terrains and facing various challenges. Their shared experiences, chronicled under the project dubbed "Hajj on Horseback," showcased the whirlwind nature of their expedition. Celebrated on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, they garnered a following exceeding 345,000 and 250,000 respectively, offering their audiences a glimpse into their daily lives. One of the participants, Abdelkader Harkassi Aidi, recounted their struggles in Bosnia when stray horses nearly led them into danger, and another harrowing experience in a muddy tunnel in France where a horse nearly drowned. Such instances enriched their spiritual journey while testing their resolve and camaraderie. Preparing for this challenging expedition took four years, and once on the road, the group faced physical, administrative, and emotional hurdles, like the necessity to improvise every day. Their videos, portraying camping scenes, cooking, and interacting with locals, have drawn in viewers, with some clips surpassing 550,000 views, further resonating with the themes of faith, humanity, and connectivity. Thus, the Pilgrims have illustrated how ancient practices can seamlessly intertwine with contemporary social media, forging a unique narrative that traverses both time and technology.
