At least two people died when an explosion hit a military barracks in Viacha, about 30km from La Paz, Sunday‑afternoon (18:30 GMT).

According to Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano, 58 civilians and military personnel were injured when pyrotechnic material detonated in the artillery regiment’s compound. The incident occurred shortly after 14:30 local time on Friday.

Health official Rita Nebraska reports that between 10 and 15 people may have lost their lives in the blast, though the exact death toll remains uncertain. The impact shattered windows in dozens of neighbouring homes and left a large crater at the site.

Police officials warned that leftover fireworks stored at the barracks could still pose a danger and urged residents to remain at least 150 m away while emergency crews clear the rubble. The city’s authorities have declared three days of mourning to honour those affected.
