In brief
As Russian forces advance in Ukraine, police officer Volodymyr Nikulin has had to flee multiple cities, coping with loss and danger while dedicating himself to assisting evacuees and maintaining peace.
In the heart of war-torn Ukraine, Volodymyr Nikulin, a police lieutenant colonel, embodies the struggle faced by countless civilians amid the ongoing conflict. Over the past decade, he has migrated from city to city, each time leaving behind homes and familiarity as the advancing Russian forces encroach further into his country’s eastern Donbas region. Nestled in his battered, shrapnel-marked car, which he affectionately refers to as his "lucky car," Nikulin finds solace amid chaos. Despite the dire circumstances—currently residing in a friend’s apartment in Sloviansk, just 15 miles from active combat—he keeps his possessions sparse: a small sack of clothing and essential supplies in two plastic bags. This necessity to remain nimble underscores the turmoil of life in a war zone. He hasn’t fully unpacked his belongings, often opting to sleep in the apartment's office rather than the bedroom. Nikulin constantly prepares to flee again as the omnipresent sound of artillery shells reminds him of his precarious situation. "Who knows where I’ll be in a few months?” he reflects, highlighting the unpredictable nature of his existence.Since the conflict escalated, Nikulin has seen firsthand the devastating impact of war. He recalls the loss of his home in Donetsk in 2014 and again in Mariupol in 2022, ultimately finding himself displaced from Myrnohrad earlier this summer. These experiences have made him acutely aware of the anguish and uncertainty facing millions of Ukrainians forced to leave their beloved cities. In addition to his own survival, Nikulin plays a vital role in protecting others. He has bravely assisted civilians and journalists in escaping besieged areas, risking his life to ensure their stories of suffering are heard by the world. This intersection of danger and duty reveals the resilience required to protect his community amidst profound upheaval. As he navigates shifting landscapes and lives in constant transition, Volodymyr Nikulin’s story stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who bear the burden of war while striving to maintain order in chaos.
