In brief

The death of an Arab citizen of Israel, abducted during a Hamas attack, highlights the dire conditions facing hostages in Gaza.

The Israeli military announced on Friday that Hamza Ziyadne, a 23-year-old Arab citizen of Israel, was tragically killed while being held hostage in Gaza. This unsettling news comes amidst faltering efforts by mediators to establish a truce between Israel and Hamas to facilitate the release of hostages. Over 15 months post the Hamas-led incursion on October 7, 2023, nearly 98 hostages remain captive in Gaza. Israeli authorities have declared roughly 36 hostages as presumed dead.Hamza's death was confirmed shortly after the funeral of his father, Youssef Ziyadne, aged 53, who was also taken hostage during the assault. Their bodies were reportedly discovered together in a tunnel located beneath Rafah in southern Gaza, alongside those of their deceased captors, though the timeline of their discovery remains unclear. Before their identification, neither Hamza nor his father had been classified as presumed dead, which has heightened anxieties among other families of the captives. The lack of clarity surrounding the circumstances of their deaths is troubling, as hostages have previously been killed in military airstrikes or have been executed by their captors. Israeli military spokesman Nadav Shoshani mentioned on Wednesday that investigations into their deaths are ongoing.Hamas’s attacks have not spared Israel's Arab citizens, with at least 17 confirmed killed, alongside numerous others taken hostage. Jimenez suggested that the toll of the October assault has seen around 1,200 fatalities and 250 hostages taken, reflecting the profound impact of ongoing regional conflicts.
