In brief

Founded in 2021, Haraz Coffee House is poised to double its locations to 60 by year-end, despite challenges in sourcing Yemeni coffee due to ongoing conflicts. Hamzah Nasser, who transitioned from truck driver to entrepreneur, is reshaping the coffee culture landscape.

Hamzah Nasser's Haraz Coffee House has emerged as a significant player in the coffee landscape since its inception in 2021 in Dearborn, Michigan. Riding a wave of interest in alcohol-free, late-night gathering spaces, Nasser aims to expand his chain to 60 locations by the end of this year from the current 30. However, his journey has not been without challenges. The recent bombing of the Yemeni port of Hudaydah has complicated his already arduous logistics for obtaining coffee shipments essential to his cafes. The conflict has created considerable stress for Nasser, who understands that the authenticity of his brand relies on genuine Yemeni coffee. Nasser's background is an inspiring one—he moved from Yemen at the age of six and transitioned from being a truck driver to a coffee entrepreneur, now overseeing operations from a sprawling 70,000-square-foot building in Dearborn. This facility boasts industrial roasters and a bakery, where skilled staff, including a French pastry chef, collaborate to elevate the cafe’s offerings. Initially focused on establishing cafes in Arab neighborhoods and near mosques, Haraz Coffee House's expansion strategy has broadened to vibrant, diverse areas that appeal to families and younger crowds. With each new location, the brand hopes not only to thrive financially but also to build a community centered around shared experiences—over pistachio lattes and cultural connection. As the trend for late-night coffee spots continues to rise, Nasser's determination and entrepreneurial spirit may lead Haraz Coffee House to redefine coffee culture across America, making it a fixture in numerous neighborhoods, regardless of proximity to other Yemeni cafes.
