In brief
Japanese bidet toilets boast innovative features, but proper maintenance is key to preserving their quality and appearance.
Japanese company Toto, renowned for its high-tech toilet designs featuring heated seats and automatic flushing, has issued an important reminder: refrain from using toilet paper to wipe the toilet seats. As the company explained last week, using toilet paper can lead to microscopic scratches on the seat's surface, significantly impacting its appearance over time. This cautionary advice comes in response to numerous social media complaints regarding scratches and discoloration of their toilet seats. A representative from Toto informed the Mainichi Shimbun that the seats, crafted from a durable plastic resin, were chosen for their resistance to cleaning agents and their capacity for detailed designs. However, cleaning the seat with toilet paper can create fine scratches where dirt collects, resulting in an unsightly discoloration. It's worth noting that Toto is not alone in this guidance—industry experts and various lifestyle resources have also previously stated that toilet paper can be abrasive. Users are encouraged to use soft cloths lightly dampened with water or mild detergent instead. It’s crucial to steer clear of any harsh cleaning tools, such as metal scrubbers or chemical thinners, which can further damage the toilet seat's delicate surface. While Toto is exploring more scratch-resistant materials for its innovative toilet ranges, the company has stated that there are currently no immediate plans to alter the existing composition. Toto's flagship product, the Washlet, includes an impressive array of features like automatic lids and air drying functions. With their refined design aesthetics reflecting Japan's hospitality and attention to detail, these advanced toilets have become increasingly popular among international visitors and a source of national pride. Proper care and maintenance, however, remain essential to ensure these functional masterpieces continue to impress.
