In brief

As Halloween approaches, Pluckley, England, becomes a hotspot for ghost hunters and curious visitors. With at least 12 reputed spirits among its 1,000 residents, the village's haunted history invites thrills and some resistance as locals cope with the influx of paranormal enthusiasts.

In the quaint village of Pluckley, England, tales of the supernatural come alive every October, prompting both believers and skeptics to explore its haunted legends. Said to be home to at least a dozen spirits, this ancient settlement, located about 50 miles southeast of London, claims eerie happenings in places such as St. Nicholas Church, its graveyard, and local pubs. Weird phenomena range from the ghostly figure of the "watercress lady" to the chilling cries echoed in the nearby "screaming woods." As Halloween draws near, the village sees a surge of ghost hunters and thrill-seekers flocking to its haunted sites. However, the influx of visitors brings mixed feelings among locals. James Buss, owner of the Dering Arms, a reputedly haunted pub, expresses concerns about the 2,000 visitors who sometimes flood the village, leading to rowdiness and property damage. "We've had hundreds on every corner where there is supposed to be a ghost, and they would trash the churchyard, light fires," Buss lamented. In an effort to manage the chaos, he occasionally darkens the pub’s windows and locks the doors when train arrivals coincide with Halloween, hoping to redirect the throngs toward local ghostly attractions, such as a sign that warns, "slow down or you will upset our ghosts." In the midst of the paranormal frenzy, Pluckley remains both a site of eerie excitement and a community grappling with the challenges that its ghostly reputation brings, reminding us that even the most storied legends can be a double-edged sword.
