In brief

During a 14-hour flight from Melbourne to Doha, an Australian couple faced a harrowing situation after a woman died mid-flight, forcing them to sit next to her body for the final hours of their journey. The airline's handling of the incident has raised questions about protocols and passenger support.

An Australian couple's much-anticipated trip to Venice turned into an unforgettable nightmare when they were seated next to a deceased passenger during a 14-hour flight from Melbourne, Australia, to Doha, Qatar. This distressing experience began when a woman collapsed mid-flight, prompting the flight attendants to take immediate action in an attempt to save her life.Fellow passenger Mitchell Ring described the tense moments that followed the incident during an interview with Channel 9's "A Current Affair." "They did everything they could," Ring said. "Unfortunately, the lady couldn’t be saved, which was pretty heartbreaking to watch.” As the situation unfolded, flight attendants tried to transfer the deceased woman's body to the business class section using a wheelchair. However, the dimensions of the aisle posed a challenge, preventing successful relocation. Consequently, the crew made the decision to place the body next to Mr. Ring and his wife, Jennifer Colin, after asking Mr. Ring to move one seat over into an adjacent row.Emotionally recounting the experience, Colin admitted to feeling shocked and terrified. A self-described nervous flyer, she ultimately chose to relocate to a different part of the aircraft. Upon landing, Mr. Ring reported that they were instructed to remain seated as paramedics removed blankets concealing the body, adding that the couple had received no support from the airline during or after the ordeal.Qatar Airways later released a statement indicating that airline officials had reached out to the couple seated next to the deceased passenger to discuss their concerns regarding the incident. The airline emphasized its commitment to addressing passenger needs and experiences. This unfortunate incident has raised important questions about the protocols surrounding passenger deaths during flights and how airlines manage such sensitive situations.
