Pope Leo XIV Urges Global Peace in First Sunday Address

Pope Leo XIV's first address as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church at St. Peter's Square resonated with calls for peace, humanitarian aid, and a focus on spiritual vocations.

 

On May 11, 2025, Pope Leo XIV made his debut on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, delivering a powerful inaugural message to thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square. His address, which marked his first Sunday blessing as pontiff, resonated with a plea for peace across the globe, notably in conflict zones like Ukraine and Gaza. “Never again war,” he implored, rallying the crowd and directing his message toward global leaders.

Pope Leo drew comparisons to World War II, emphasizing the need for “authentic, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine, where hostilities have displaced countless families. He urged world leaders to ensure the safe return of children taken from their families, a reference to the ongoing plight of many Ukrainian children transported to Russia amid the war.

Moreover, he called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, stressing the urgency for humanitarian aid to reach the beleaguered civilian populace. Addressing the situation created by Hamas’ assault on Israel seven months prior, he urged the return of hostages to their families, underlining the human suffering that continues in the region.

Leo’s poignant calls for peace echoed themes frequently highlighted by his predecessor, Pope Francis. The new pope extended special greetings to all mothers, aligning his message with Mother’s Day celebrations in several countries, including Italy and the U.S. In acknowledging the day, he encouraged more Catholics to embrace religious vocations, a plea supported by the observation of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, emphasizing the church's urgent need for new clergy.
