Iranian Residents Flee Tehran Amid Escalating Conflict
As airstrikes and retaliatory attacks intensify, Iranians face fuel shortages and disrupted communications while seeking refuge.
As tensions sharpen between Iran and Israel, a growing wave of residents are attempting to flee Tehran. Following a series of Israeli airstrikes that commenced on June 14, 2025, fear and unrest have engulfed the Iranian capital. Meisam, a 41-year-old poet, described his rush to escape the city as he joined an influx of others trying to leave, making his way to his hometown in East Azerbaijan Province late Sunday night.
"Everything’s uncertain," Meisam remarked while navigating the chaos on the roads, choked with out-bound traffic at all hours. Reports reveal that gas stations are facing closures due to a critical shortage of fuel, and those still open are capping purchases at just ten liters per vehicle. Many residents, struggling with severe disruptions to internet and phone services, remain vulnerable to misinformation and lack critical updates about the situation around them.
The escalation followed intense military exchanges, with Iran's health ministry reporting over 200 fatalities and more than 1,400 injured as a result of the strikes. In Israel, at least 24 deaths have been confirmed due to incoming Iranian barrages. The urgency of evacuation was underscored when the Israeli military issued a social media evacuation order for a significant area in northeastern Tehran, warning about forthcoming operations targeting military infrastructure.
Compounded by fuel constraints and technology blackouts, the situation in Tehran continues to deteriorate, leaving many residents scrambling to find a safe retreat as their lives are engulfed in turmoil.
