Airstrike Targets Al-Shabab in Ongoing Battle for Strategic Town in Somalia
A coordinated airstrike by the US and Somali forces resulted in the deaths of 12 al-Shabab militants in a crucial battle for control of Adan Yabaal, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region.
The US and Somali forces have launched a targeted airstrike against al-Shabab militants, aimed at reclaiming the strategic town of Adan Yabaal. This operation, described by the Somali information ministry as "well-coordinated," resulted in the deaths of 12 militants, including senior figures within the al-Qaeda-aligned group. The strikes were a direct response to al-Shabab's recent attack on the town, which serves as a critical base for military operations against the group.
The increase in violent encounters reflects growing apprehension regarding a possible resurgence of jihadist forces in Somalia. This comes on the heels of a recorded attack that targeted President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's convoy last month. Al-Shabab, which has maintained control over significant regions in southern and central Somalia, has been entrenched in a conflict with the Somali government for nearly two decades, seeking to overturn the current federal government and establish an Islamist state.
Despite previous setbacks for al-Shabab, where an African Union-led peacekeeping mission pushed the extremists onto the defensive in 2022 and 2023, the group continues to pose a serious threat. The Somali government, however, asserts that al-Shabab's capacity has been notably weakened.
The airstrike, conducted late on Wednesday with assistance from US Africa Command (Africom), was intended to disrupt militant activities. According to the information ministry, the targeted strikes hit an identified site used by al-Shabab for meetings and concealment, with the announcement emphasizing that there were no civilian casualties in the operation.
Adan Yabaal, located in the Middle Shabelle region, has changed hands between the government and al-Shabab several times, with the militants seizing control in 2016 before being retaken by government forces in 2022. Accusations of al-Shabab capturing the town again have emerged, as local reports indicate that militants have declared control, although the government has not confirmed this situation.
In another instance of military engagement, the national army reported killing at least 35 militants near Baidoa on Thursday after the group attacked an army base. President Mohamud has characterized the al-Shabab advances as temporary setbacks in their overall military strategy, reaffirming his government's commitment to eradicate the militant threat once and for all.
